The Witcher hasn't been having a great time of it, ever since Henry Cavill decided to leave for greener pastures, and it was struggling to please fans even before that. It seems like Netflix is struggling to get anything Witcher-related out right now, with Season 4 still without a release date, and spinoffs like The Witcher: Blood Origins absolutely lambasted by fans.
Another spinoff of The Witcher that was probably supposed to have been released by now is The Rats, which was a prequel miniseries about the group of teenagers that Ciri meets towards the end of The Witcher Season 3. It reportedly wrapped production over two years ago, but troubles during post-production have reportedly altered what it was going to be.
Witcher Spinoff The Rats Reportedly A "Disaster" Behind The Scenes
We don't know much about the troubles that The Rats has faced, but a new report from Redanian Intelligence suggests that it may be far worse than we all initially thought. According to this report, various sources has described the behind the scenes of The Rats as "a disaster", and that "everything went wrong" during the making of the show.
In fact, it went so badly that someone apparently claimed that The Rats is "worse than Blood Origin", which really does paint a not-so-pretty picture as to just how disastrous the making of this show has reportedly been.
As for what's happening to The Rats now, Redanian Intelligence still has no idea. It was last reported that the show could have been turned into a feature-length special, while it's also now rumored that Netflix may have just scrapped the entire thing entirely and will just serve it to us as flashback scenes in The Witcher Season 4. Either way, it definitely sounds like it's not going to be the six-to-eight-episode prequel miniseries it originally started out as.
Thankfully, things are going much better on the gaming side of the franchise, with The Witcher 4 shaping up pretty nicely. CD Projekt Red has been saying all the right things, such as their commitment to scrapping fetch quests and bigger settlements, but as they say, the proof is in the pudding. Until we get our hands on it, keep those expectations in check.
